The Elephant Management Dilemma

The dilemmas of managing elephants in reserves are generally poorly understood. The different attitudes to basic management philosophies have lead to many acrimonious debates and deep rifts have developed between some of the respective proponents. While those from the anti-culling lobby have condemned the killing of elephants, the non-interference policies are not without their own ethical dilemmasinfo-icon. It is not the purpose of this article to try to favour either one of these two points of view, but to try to set the situation in Kruger National Park against the background of other national parks in Africa. The intention is to get to the heart of the elephant dilemma so that readers themselves may understand the issues and have some empathy with elephant managers and the decisions with which they are faced.
